Discover Syracuse

Syracuse is a city rich in history, culture and breathtaking views. From the ancient Greek Theater to the island of Ortigia, every corner tells a story. Stroll through the picturesque streets, discover the beauty of the sea and be enchanted by Sicilian gastronomy.

Greek Theater of Syracuse

Among the most spectacular archaeological sites in Sicily, the Greek Theater in Syracuse is one of the most important relics of ancient Magna Graecia. Built in the 5th century BC, it is carved directly into the rock and is still used today for theatrical performances, including the famous Greek tragedies that take place every spring. Sitting on the bleachers and imagining ancient spectators intent on watching the performances is a thrilling experience. The theater is located within the Neapolis Archaeological Park, which is also home to other wonders such as the Roman Amphitheater and the Ear of Dionysus, a uniquely shaped cave with extraordinary acoustics.

Market of Ortigia

A must-do experience to immerse yourself in local culture is a visit to the Ortigia Market. Every morning, the stalls are filled with the freshest produce: freshly caught fish, seasonal fruits and vegetables, typical cheeses such as Sicilian pecorino, and specialties such as salted tuna and botargo. Here you can savor the authentic spirit of Sicily, amidst vendors shouting to beckon customers and the irresistible scent of spices and citrus fruits. Stopping at one of the kiosks to enjoy a swordfish or tuna mortadella sandwich is a real ritual for those visiting Syracuse

Maniace Castle

Overlooking the sea at the southern end of Ortigia, Maniace Castle is a medieval fortress built by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century. This imposing structure served as a defensive bulwark and today offers an extraordinary panorama of the Syracuse coastline. Inside you can admire the ancient walls, watchtowers and a large central courtyard that often hosts cultural events and exhibitions. Walking along the castle walls, one can enjoy spectacular views of the crystal clear sea and the boats that ply the waters. To visit Maniace Castle is to immerse oneself in military history and to admire one of the most striking corners of Syracuse.

Source Arethusa

The Arethusa Fountain is one of the most fascinating places in Ortigia, a freshwater spring located just a few steps from the sea, surrounded by papyrus and rich in history and mythology. According to legend, the nymph Arethusa turned into this spring to escape the god Alphaeus, giving rise to a tale of love and pursuit that still fascinates visitors today. The small body of water is populated by ducks and fish and creates a striking contrast with the deep blue sea. Surrounding the spring are restaurants and cafes with spectacular views, ideal for a relaxing break immersed in the magic of the ancient city.
